Brian Felshaw, period 2

On the Morning of September 11th, 2001, our country was attacked by a radical terrorist group called Al Queda. This event has influence US culture permanently. It was an event not unlike the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. A few days after the attack, President George W. Bush gave an address to congress and the American people regarding this attack. He gave an epic and inspiring speech that motivated and unified the country, very similar to John F. Kennedy’s inaugural speech with his discussions about the cold war. It is for this reason that I have chosen to memorize a selection of Bush’s speech. While I may have been young when the event occurred, I am able today to see the negative effects of this terrorist attack, and the positive effects of President Bush’s speech. This speech often motivates me when I am discouraged by anything, not just a terrorist attack. Quotes from it such as, “Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or justice to our enemies, justice will be done,” bring to me a sense of security and patriotism that I have not felt in the past before. It almost makes me want to go out and join the Marines and serve my country right then and there. While some may have the opinion that George Bush is a bad president; I maintain that he lead us through 9/11, and we have had no terrorist attacks or threats since then. For these reasons and others, I have decided to memorize selections of this wonderful speech.

The obviously reoccurring images are flames, bright fire-like colors, and books. A few of them even have a firefighter shaped being as well. Some of them have books on fire too. Based on my understanding of the novel, the one on the third row furthest to the left is the cover that struck me the most. Surprisingly, it is the simplest, but in its own way it is very interesting. This is because it brings up the question, why would someone burn a book? It looks realistic, not fake and cartoonish like some of the other book covers. It features a red top half, and a black bottom half, with the book that is on fire laid out on a table with the camera close in on it. The flames are very big and tall for such a small book, and they are captured in a way that is almost peaceful, but as we know from the actual storyline of the book; they are deadly. In its simplicity, it leaves the reader wondering what more could lay underneath the cover, and makes them want to pick it up and start reading. The other ones seem phony, and only appeal to certain audiences. While some may say that those ones are more artful, it can also be maintained that they are more complicated and don’t make sense. Ray Bradbury’s names are in capital letters, which suggests to the reader that this book may be a drama, or of a serious nature. All of these things add up to a great book cover.

One of the most fun extreme sports available is snowmobiling. However it is also one of the most dangerous. Many deaths have ocurred because certain care was not taken to learn the techniques of snowmobiling. When taken seriously, snowmobiling can be very thrilling.

The first thing that must be done before riding is to be fitted for the right snowmobile. Everyone is not the same size, so not everone can have the same size snowmobile. If there is a large person on a small snowmobile, that person is more prone to tipping. On the other hand, a small person on a large snowmobile will have a lot of difficulty steering and controlling the vehicle.

To start it, the key must be put in the ignition, and then attached to the rider. In the event of the rider flipping off, the key will be pulled out of the ignition and will kill the engine. From here you can turn the snowmobile on, and use the gas on the right handle bar.

The rider has two styles of riding to choose from; standing or sitting. When riding cross country, many ride sitting down because the ride is often smoother. Standing is a more athletic way to ride, which will help absorb the shock of the bumpy rides on mountains. When riding on mountains, the rider will often find themselves riding sideways on the side of a hill. Here, the rider is very prone to tipping. In order to counter this, the rider must then shift his/her balance to the upper side of the hill. This can be done by having both feet on the upper side of the snowmobile. If not done correctly, the snowmobile will tip and the rider will be crushed.

Many lessons can be learned from snowmobiling, one of which is keeping your eyes open. On cloudy days, one cannot tell where the white snowy horizon ends and the white cloudy sky starts. This can often result in other riders “appearing” out of no where as they come to the top of a hill and desend down it. This can be applied to anything, and can make one  more alert to their world around them.

The question may be asked, why do something that has so many risks? Those risks can be easily eliminated if the proper precautions are taken. There is nothing more thrilling than speeding down a hill at 50 mph.

Points of her arguement

  • Naps have a negative connotation in American society
  • Naps are healthy, not wastes of time
  • If research was conducted, it would show that employees who nap perform better than those who don’t

It is constructed by giving humorous background about naps (a pathos attack), and then giving a plausable course of action (logos attack).

I agree to a certain extent. Sometimes, a nap isn’t always needed. Often it is, but not everyday.  However it would not happen in today’s American Society. It would be a fad, and then slowly die away just like all fads.

5.) I interprit the final commentary as an ironic situation that is part of the “what if” situation created earlier.

6.) The tone is much less ironic without the pictures, the funky cartoonish pictures make the issues less serious.

Assignment27 Apr 2008 03:03 pm

In Virginia Woolf’s Professions for Women, she makes an analogy about Victorian women. She uses the angel from “The Angel in the House,” to show how the ideas of the Victorian women (cleaning, cooking, mothering) slowly but surely creep into her writing. In the essay, she mentions that she is writing a review about a book by man. The Angel would have her be kind to that man and write a good review, and instead Woolf metaphorically “kills” the angel and is able to write like she wants to. With this being said, she makes the claim that the angel is now dead. In all actuality, this “angel” cannot be diminished one time by one woman for all women. Each woman individually must “kill” her if they are to be able to act freely for themselves. Even with the angel being dead, her ideas and what she stood for will always live on in each young girl’s heart.

It is a good thing too, that those ideas will always live on. Society today makes the word mother seem like a dreadful thing. Surely, there is no better calling in life than to be the nurturer, caretaker, and teacher of a child; a mother in every sense of the word. Rearing a child is the very peak of having a mind of your own, you are free to raise that child in any way you see fit. Woolf implies that being a caretaker of someone is to be trapped. It is such a very sad thing that women today give the title ‘mother’ such a negative connotation.

#3) Obviously she does not mean literally uncouncious. It seems like however that she is talking about writing with the uncouncious. The concious mind is very logical and literal, so it would be hard for it to write a fiction novel. The uncouncious mind is far more broad and open to writing about things that are fiction, in this sense I agree.

#4) All it is is her description of how quietly and slowly the Angel comes into her writing. And before she know is it, she is already in there.

#5) Whenever you feel scared or nervous, small things start to startle you. With small short sentences, it creates that feeling as if the angel was stalking the reader as well.
